History of Master of Islamic Studies
Master of Islamic Studies of Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (hereinafter MSI UMY) was established in 2000 precisely on 25 Rabiulawwal 1421 H / 28th of June 2000 based on the Decree of the Executive Board of Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta No. 165 / SK-BPH / UMY / VI / 2000 . The MSI Study Program was the first of postgraduate program in UMY. The establishment of MSI Study Program and UMY graduate program was motivated by the wish of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta’s association to produce excellence educators in education, which is the first and main business charity field for Muhammadiyah association.
The establishment of MSI Study Program was greeted by not only from among the educator in Muhammadiyah environment but also from various Islamic organizations. In time to time, MSI Study Program have done the cooperations with several parties and ministries (departments) thus it was increased the students’ quality significally. The total number of active students from the last five years (since batch 2013) is 235 students. MSI Study Program obtained the recognized status based on the Decree of Minister of Religious Affairs no. 18 Year 2001. Recently MSI Study Program has graduated 1260 alumni.
Four years after MSI Study Program was established, in the early beginning of 2004 Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta established the Magister of Management Program. Then, UMY was established the very first Doctoral Program in Muhammadiyah Higher Education area. MSI Study Program organize five concentration of studies such as Psychology of Islamic Education, Islamic Legal Thinking, Economics Islam, Islamic Counseling and Communication, and Supervision of Islamic Education. MSI Study Program obtained B accreditation from National Accreditation Agency on June 2010 and reacreditated based on the decree No. 789/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/M/VI/2015.
